Reminiscing our Purushottama's Sri Rama's childhood.
A Shloka...born of Shoka!
Yes, what Maharishi Valmiki intends as a curse, emerges from his mouth as a sing-song verse –
After Devarishi Narada leaves, Maharishi Valmiki goes to take a bath…and ends up cursing a hunter for killing an innocent bird…and also composing the first shloka that sets the tone for the entire Adi Kavya. If you’re wondering how a curse is poetry, here you go…
मा निषाद प्रतिष्ठां त्वमगमः शाश्वतीः समाः |
यत् क्रौञ्चमिथुनादेकमवधीः काममोहितम् ||
Meaning – “O violent hunter! As you have killed one bird of a couple that was struck with passion, you will never get everlasting peace for all eternity…”
However, do you know that this shloka has a deeper meaning than what you might see at first?
Let’s keep that for the next edition of Nityaraamasmaranam!
