Shoorpanaka’s taunts found their mark. Sure enough, Khara was by his sister’s hurtful words – “My anger is rankling in me as if I have drunk salt water. I don’t care for Rama’s bravery…he is a mere human. His mistake in insulting you will cost him his life.”

“Worry not, sister, I will send Rama and his brother off to Yamaloka and you can sip their blood when my axe chops them down.”

Shoorpanakha
arose in glee on hearing Khara and praised him further, “Khara, you are the
best among all demons.” The foolish Khara was overjoyed and summoned his
commander Dooshana. “Dooshana, summon our best and fearsome demons, all 14,000
of them and let those giants all hunt Rama.”

“Load my golden chariot, Dooshana, with all the bows and arrows, sharp swords and different sharp spears. I will ride ahead of all our demons, all of Sage Pulastya’s kula to kill that evil Rama.” At once, a chariot arrived, yoked with many-coloured horses and that great army of demons followed.

Seeing that great army, Khara charged the demons, and went forth from Janasthaana, screaming loudly. Wielding maces, dart-bolts, spears, razor sharp axes, swords, Chakras, dreadful power-darts and power-bolts, iron maces, unusual bows, clubs, scimitars and pounding-shafts, that army of 14,000 fiendish demons marched. Khara’s chariot proceeded a little later behind them. As the chariot rode ahead, the four quarters trembled.
